Sergey Gorshkov’s camera trap in Southeastern Russia captured this playful adult tiger

Russian photographer, Sergey Gorshkov, has recently been named the 2020 wildlife photographer of the year. This shot of a Siberian tiger in Zemlya Leopard National Park was the image that won Gorshkov the title. The chair of the judges committee, Roz Kidman-Cox, was quoted saying, “The lighting, the colours, the texture - it's like an oil painting."

Camera trapping is a common technique used by professional photographers and conservation biologists to capture images of wild animals while no humans are around. While Gorshkov was focused on capturing the artistic beauty of this moment, camera traps are also commonly used for technical research and tracking.
