Wildfires Sorch Tiger Habitat in Bandhavgarh National Park

Fires rage across Bandhavgarh National Park

Bandhavgarh National Park, one of the most famous tiger reserves in the world, is experiencing extreme forest fires. Bandhavgarh is known for having one of the highest densities of tigers amongst all the parks in India, with experts estimating as many as 8 tigers per square kilometer. The particularly dense population has led to an increased concern over the impact the fires may have on tigers in the area.

The field director of Bandhavgarh National Park, Vincent Rahim, has indicated the fire was started independently at multiple locations. The forest service currently believes the fires are a result of local celebrations for Holi - an important spring holiday in Hinduism. While the fire appears to be coming under control, the damage is significant and there has been no official report on the impact the fires have had on tigers or any nearby wildlife.
